EUI First Public Lecture 2016

On Tuesday 25th October 2016, the Edo University, Iyamho successfully had her first Public Lecture. It was titled “Education, Regulation and Practice of Engineering in Nigeria.” It was delivered by Engr. Otis Anyaeji, FNSE, FAEng, the National President, Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE). The occasion was chaired by Prof. Adamu A. Rasheed, mni, MFR, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor administration of the University of Benin, Prof Lawrence Ezemoye. The event started at exactly 12noon with an introduction of guests which includes the Executive Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, represented by Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon; the Commissioner of Education of Edo State, Hon. Gideon Obakhan; the Village Chief of Iyamho, Evang. Bashiru Joshua Etamesor; the Otaru of Auchi, Alh. Haliru Momoh; the Idonogie of South Ibie, Alh. Kelvin Danesi, and other important dignitaries.

During his address, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Prof E.O. Aluyor, appreciated everyone present. He described the University as a young University destined for excellence. He however stressed the fact that the University is distinguished by its state of the art facilities that are second to none in the country amongst other qualities. He re-emphasized the fact that the University hopes to build and sustained a world class culture.

The guest lecturer, Engr. Otis Anyaeji commended the vision upon which the University is built. He quoted late Nelson Mandela’s assertion which states that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. He further urged that the vision be sustained. In the heart of his lecture, Engr. Otis Anyaeji affirmed that engineering is a major problem solving occupation and that students should be given the opportunity to take courses in Problem Solving; Code of Engineering Ethics; Economics, Cost Engineering, Engineering Appraisal/Valuation and Safety Engineering. He recommended that:

 Academia-Industry-Government should partner in developing research agenda and vigorously pursue patenting and commercialization. Staff exchange   programme should be encouraged between academia, industry and government. Government should provide adequate funding for engineering training centres/faculties and vocational training schools.

After the lecture the Otaru of Auchi, Alh. Haliru Momoh, was called up to make a remark. He began by thanking the University management and admonished them to be God-fearing so as to build a reputation for the University. The Governor’s representative, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon congratulated the University for her First Public Lecture and added that the University will continue to get government support.

The Ag. Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. E.O. Aluyor, presented awards to the Executive Governor of Edo State, the guest lecturer and the Chairman of the occasion. The Registrar of the University, Dr. (Mrs.) Isoken Ogboro, closed the occasion by thanking the guests and others for their presence.
