EFFECT OF CRUDE OIL POLLUTION ON THE GROWTH AND PRODUCTION OF TWO SPECIES OF CAPSICUM IN POLLUTED SOILS OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA (M.Sc. Thesis). Edokpolor Osazee Ohanmu

Abstract

A field study was conducted to investigate the effects of crude oil pollution on the growth and yield of Capsicum annuum and Capsicum frutescens during the rainy and dry seasons. The study was carried out in the botanical garden of Biological Sciences Department, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on soils that were collected from Ologbo, Benin City. There were three crude oil polluted soils (control, medium and highly impacted) and two Capsicum species (C. annuum and C. frutescens) giving six constituted treatments (C. annuum in Control (CA), C. annuum in Medium polluted soil (MA), C. annuum in Heavily polluted soil (HA), C. frutescens in Control (CF), C. frutescens in Medium polluted soil (MF) and C. frutescens in Heavily polluted soil (HF). The soil There was no fruit yield in the crude oil polluted soils as compared to the control which produced fruit yield. There was no significant difference in the pH of soils in the control and crude oil polluted soils. The initial concentration of heavy metals and total hydrocarbon (THC) increased with increasing intensity of crude oil pollution before the commencement of the experiment. These final concentrations of heavy metals in the soils was significantly higher (p<0.05) than the initial concentration of heavy metals at the end of the experiment except total hydrocarbon which was lower than the initial concentration present in the soil at the end of the experiment which lasted for 18 weeks. In conclusion, the was more tolerant to crude oil pollution than the Crude oil pollution significantly affected the performance of by the reduction in plant height, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry matter weight. However, the plant can be used as a bio-indicator of environmental pollution in a given area.
